The loss factor (typically 5%, applied as V × 1.05) covers pouring losses, formwork leakage and leftover mix when ordering ready-mix concrete. It converts the theoretical geometry volume into the quantity you actually need to purchase.
The anchor-bolt pedestal rises slightly above grade (typically 0.3-0.7 ft), and concrete is needed for that part too. The volume is calculated over the full height (h + h_top) times the plan area, so leaving out h_top would under-order concrete.
The purchase volume in cubic yards (V × 1.05 converted by 1 yd³ = 27 ft³) is multiplied by the unit price. For example, a 3.61 × 3.61 × 3.94 ft block needs about 2.16 yd³; at $47.8/yd³ that is roughly $103.
The cement content estimate uses about 23.7 lb of C30 cement per cubic foot of concrete, roughly matching a 1 : 1.42 : 3.23 : 0.47 mix ratio with 42.5 ordinary Portland cement. It helps when ordering bagged cement or confirming ready-mix proportions.
